Identification
The species grows to 35 cm for a weight of 231 g. Plumage dark blue with rows of lighter blue spots on nape, throat, belly and breast. Dark forehead band, light blue wing patch with row of silvery spots. Only subspecies with black bill.

Range and habitat
Subspecies found in central and eastern China, south to north Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam. Species found from the Himalayas to Sumatra and Java. Lives in semi-open forests, woodlands and bushy areas, from 1000 to 4000 m.

Status : The species has a large range and is very common near watercourses. Declining alarmingly in Indonesia because of trapping and habitat loss.
