Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 2 m and a weight of 57 kg although most specimens don’t grow over 1 m. Flat body with huge mouth, round-shaped fins. Coloration mottled beige to gray or brown. Warty skin.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean from south-western Barents sea to Mediterranean sea and west African coasts south to Mauritania. Lives in sandy and muddy bottoms, rarely rocky bottoms, down to 1000 meters.

Status : The species is still relatively common but is slow growing and late-maturing. It is vulnerable to overfishing which is the main threat it faces.
