Identification
The species grows to 28 cm in length for a weight of 93 g. Dark grey breast, back and belly. Rufous orange top of head and nape, ear coverts silvery-white, red tail and wings. Subspecies with blacker throat, dark breast and paler crown.

Range and habitat
Subspecies endemic to South-east China. Species found from eastern Myanmar to Laos and central Vietnam, to most of south and southeast China. Lives in broadleaf evergreen forest with thick undergrowth, secondary growth.

Status : The species seems to be generally scarce but present in many protected areas within its range. Nominate subspecies could be extinct.
