Identification
The species grows to 24 cm in length for a weight of 75 g. Plumage globally brown, being darker on tail and more orange-chestnut on breast. White eye-ring extending into supercilium and band behind eyes. Head feathers with dark edges.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in most of southeast China and also in east Laos and north Vietnam. The other subspecies is endemic to Hainan island. Lives in shrublands, abandoned gardens, open woodlands, to 1800 m.

Status : The species has a large range but is rare in Vietnam because of intense trapping. Introduced successfully in Singapore and Taiwan.
