Identification
The species grows to 16 cm in length for a weight of 26 g. Female brown, duller on breast with light streaks and yellow throat. Male shiny black with brown wings and tail. Horn-colored bill, black crest. Female’s crest is small and brown.

Range and habitat
The species lives in eastern Asia, from the Himalayas and central India to east China, south to central-western Thailand. Lives in open dry grassy hillsides with bushes, terraced cultivation, to 2440 m.
