Identification
The species grows to 44 cm in length for a weight of 550 g. Light grey-white to pure white plumage with black flight feathers. Underside of tail, vent and thighs with rows of black spots. Yellow bill, grey feet.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Australasia, from coastal and southern New Guinea and Aru Island to parts of north Australia. Lives in swamp and mangrove forests, forest edges and woodlands, to 300 m.

Status : The species is still widespread but the huge flocks formerly encountered are greatly diminished because of hunting, especially in Australia.
