Identification
Adults can reach a total length of 30.5 cm for a weight of 115 g. Large head with black bill. Dark grey-brown plumage, lower breast and upper back. Dark brown face and breast, large orange spot behind eyes. Subspecies with no white spot behind orange ear-coverts, darker plumage overall.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to Hainan island. The species also occurs in eastern Tonkin, north and Central Annam in northern Vietnam and eastern Laos. Found in submontane evergreen forests, from 400 to 1700 meters.

Status : The species is so far common in its relatively small range. In most parts of its range, it is the commonest laughingthrush species. Occurs in protected areas.
