Identification
Adults can reach 23 cm in length for a weight of 67 g. Slate-grey wings, back and tail with clear edges to feathers and white wing band, white rump. Rest of body dull orange-chestnut. Subspecies with bright orange head and breast.
Range and habitat
Subspecies endemic to west Java. Species found from India to south China, south to Greater Sundas. Lives in forest understorey, second growth and gardens, near rivers, to 2300 m.

Status : The species is adaptable and locally abundant. Indonesian subspecies are nearly extinct in the wild because of relentless capture for trade.
