Identification
The species grows to 31 cm in length for a weight of 132 g. Conspicuous black mask from forehead to eyes and cheeks. Rest of head and breast light grey with dark edges on feathers giving scaly effect. Cream belly, brown wings.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia, in most of the eastern half of China, south China and south to central Vietnam. Introduced in Japan. Lives in woodlands, scrub, cultivated areas, urban parks, to 1000 m.

Status : The species is not targeted by the songbird trade and remains relatively safe so far. It is adaptable and often numerous where it occurs.
