Identification
Adults grow to 90 cm in length. Snout straight. Row of well visible clear conical scales on neck and on upper flanks. Coloration greyish-yellow with black edges to scales giving a peppered aspect. Crest broken between head and back.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-East Asia and is endemic to the islands of Halmaheira and Ternate, in the Moluccas archipelago, in central Indonesia. Lives in forests and woodlands, almost always near water.

IUCN RED LIST : VULNERABLE
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species has a small range and is declining faster than formerly predicted. Main causes of decline are relentless collection for local and international trade followed by habitat loss.
