Identification
Adults can reach a length of 30 cm for a weight of 200 g. Fairly long dark brown tail. Wings dark brown, breast dark pinkish-red, most of head ashy-grey. Large black area with white spots on back of neck. Orange-yellow iris.

Range and habitat
This species occurs from India to Taiwan, south to Philippines and Indonesia. Subspecies found from Myanmar to east China and Taiwan. Lives in woodlands, jungles, gardens, urban areas, avoids too dry climate.

Status : The species is common to abundant in most of its range. Subspecies chinensis and tigrina have been introduced in various parts of the world.
