Identification
Adults can reach up to 115 cm in length for a weight of 5,4 kg. Distinctive swan-like species with entirely white plumage except from black tips to primary flight feathers. Bright red bill and legs. Female has darker iris and is smaller.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, mostly east of the Andes except in Central Chile, from south Brazil to Tierra del Fuego. Lives in lagoons and freshwater swamps will well vegetated, rarely above 1300 m.

Status : The species is common to abundant in its range. It is locally vulnerable to habitat loss and pollution.
