Identification
The species grows to about 60 cm in length. Very slim body and short round head with large eyes with vertical pupils. Coloration from dark grey to reddish grey to brown with thin bands on sides of head and dark transversal bands on back.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from south China (Yunnan), Thailand and Vietnam to Greater Sundas in Indonesia. The other subspecies is found in south Thailand. Lives in humid forests, often near swamps or rivers, sometimes in plantations.

Status : Although the species is tolerant of a degree of habitat modification, it relies on forested habitat to survive and could be globally declining.
