Identification
Small grouper, reaching a total length of 28 cm. Anterior part of body is from reddish-grey to bright red, posterior part of body from dark red to red brown with faint vertical bands. Faint clear dots on flank scales. Two white bars on tail fin.

Range and habitat
The species is found in the Indo-Pacific area, from Christmas Islands and Indonesia to French Polynesia and the Pitcairn Islands. Lives in shallow-water outer reefs, reef tops and lagoons, down to 60 meters.

Status : The species has a large range and seems to remain safe despite being targeted by local fisheries for subsistence.
