Identification
Adults can grow to 10 cm in length. Face, dorsal, caudal and anal fins bright blue-violet with clear blue edges on fins. Flanks color very variable, from bright orange to red or even blue with dark vertical stripes (usually violet to black).

Range and habitat
This species is found in the Indo-Pacific area, from East Africa to Tuamoto Islands, north to Izu islands, south to Lord Howe Island. Lives in lagoons, seaward reef slopes with lots of coral growth, down to 60 m.

Status : The species has a very large range and is locally common in suitable habitat. It is collected for the trade but this has no negative impact so far.
