Identification
Adults can grow to 106 cm in length. Eel-like body with large head and very small limbs. Long laterally-compressed tail. Three toes found on each leg. Coloration dark grey on flanks and back, light grey on belly.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to the United states and found in the central and central southern parts of the country, from south Missouri to east Texas. Lives in swamps, marshes, sluggish streams in flood and alluvial lands.

Status : The species remains locally common so far and can tolerate habitat modifications up to a certain degree. No imminent threats known at this time.
