Identification
One of the biggest species of its family, reaching up to 170 cm in length for a weight up to at least 80 kg. Forehead with a hump and steep profile. Coloration usually black-spotted dark silvery grey with clear white bars on top of back.
Range and habitat
The species lives in the Indo-Pacific area, from the Red Sea and East Africa to south Japan, north Australia and east to Hawaii and Marquesas islands. Lives in seaward reefs and coastal lagoons, down to 188 meters deep.

Status : The species is still locally abundant around remote atolls. It occurs in protected areas but is often caught for food. No other threats known.
