Identification
The species grows to 71 cm in length for a weight of 18 kg although very large males can exceed 30 kg. Largest of all macaques with dark brown pelage, white underside. Pink face surrounded by large whitish grey tufts and moustaches.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in central eastern Asia and seems to be endemic to the northern and central parts of China. It might occur in north-east India as well. Lives in temperate and subtropical broadleaf forests, from 600 to 2500 meters.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still widespread but has declined in the previous years because of habitat loss. Deforestation seems to have halted in the area.
