Identification
The species grows to 53 cm in length for a weight of 9 kg. Males not much bigger than females. Tail short. Black crest, dark hairs around face, face skin dark pinkish-black. Fur dark brown with breast and forelimbs golden beige.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Indonesia, occurring in the Mentawai archipelago, west of Sumatra, on North Pagai, South Pagai, Sipora and Sinakak islands. Lives in primary and secondary rainforests, coconut groves near villages.

IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species suffers greatly from habitat loss. With increasing access to remote areas comes hunting pressure and persecution as a crop pest.
