Identification
The species grows to 57 cm in length for a weight of 13 kg. Males slightly bigger than females. Bony ridges giving a distinct appearance to the muzzle. Black face, erectile crest. Pelage dark brown to black. Ischial callosities pink.
Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Indonesia, occurring only on the north-east tip of Sulawesi and on Manado Tua and Talise Islands. Lives in primary forests, sometimes secondary forests and plantations.
Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is the most threatened of all Sulawesi macaques because of intense deforestation and unsustainable poaching for bushmeat.
