Identification
The species grows to 65 cm in length for a weight of 18 kg. Heavy macaque with very short tail (looks like a white tuft), naked bright pink-red skin on face and very thick and long pelage. Pelage color grey to light brown with white belly.

Range and habitat
The species is endemic to Japan, nominate subspecies occurring in most of the Archipelago and subspecies yakui found on Yakushima island. Lives in temperate broadleaf evergreen forest mostly in mountains, to 3180 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is legally protected although specimens raiding crops can be killed. Threatened by habitat loss on the western side of the country.
