Identification
The species grows to 73 cm for a weight of 16.5 kg, Males are twice heavier than females, tail is relatively short. Facial skin dark pink to red, dark hairs around eyes, white hairs on cheeks. Rest of pelage dark golden brown, white breast.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from south-west China and north-east India to south-central China and north half of Vietnam. Species also found in north India and Nepal. Lives in montane broadleaf evergreen and mixed forests, up to 2800 m.

Status : The species remains common in parts of its range but has declined in others because of habitat loss (logging, dam construction).
