Identification
Adults can reach 46 cm in length for a weight of around 700 g. Horizontal barred and long ear-tufts. Back and wings brown with black barring. Rest of plumage white, dense black barring. Yellow bill. Subspecies larger, barring heavier.
Range and habitat
This subspecies is found in Borneo, Java and Bali in Indonesia. Species found in South East Asia, from south Myanmar and Thailand to greater Sundas. Lives in lowland evergreen forests, plantations, to 2000 m but usually lower.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is still locally common and can tolerate alterations in its habitat. However, deforestation is becoming a serious threat for this species.
