Notes : 4 other subspecies known. This subspecies was sometimes treated as a full species but is now more and more considered invalid.

Identification
Huge species, growing to over 2 m in length, powerful long tail included. Long spiny crest running from neck to tail, large dewlap and very large pair of scales on neck. Coloration greenish-brown with faint bands. Small horns on snout.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Central America, from Mexico (except Yucatan Peninsula) to Panama. Species also found in South America, to central Brazil. Lives in many kinds of forests. Also found in shrubs on xeric islands, to 1000 m.

Status : This species has a very large range and has been successfully introduced outside its range, becoming invasive. Found in many protected areas.
