Identification
The species grows to about 22 cm in length. Short crest on neck and back. Prominent ridges on sides of snout. Variable, green to dark olive green with brown to black blotches on back and mottling on head. Light green band on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in eastern Asia and found in Ryukyu Islands, Japan and on Taiwan. This subspecies is endemic to northern Taiwan. Lives in woodlands and forests, particularly in hilly areas.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species lives only on a few islands but seems to be adaptable and has been introduced elsewhere in Japan. In Taiwan, it is vulnerable to habitat loss and competition with local Diploderma swinhonis.
