Identification
The species can grow to 43 cm in length for a weight of 500 g. Elongated and downwards pointed snout, looking like a proboscis. Dark brown coloration with bluish tinge on back and belly and faint golden bands on flanks.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in western and central equatorial Africa, in the basins of Volta, Niger, Tchad, Shari and Congo rivers. Lives in slow and fast flowing rivers, even in rapids.

Status : This species has a large range and, despite considerable pressures on habitat locally, seems to remain common or slightly declining.
