Identification
Adults can reach up to 40 cm in length for a maximum weight of 4.4 kg. Laterally compressed body with small blunt head and orange eyes. Scales are shiny silvery with slight dark edge. Large black band on anal fin and tail peduncle.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South-America, in most of the Amazon river basin, from Colombia to Guianas and Brazil, south to Bolivia. Range remains to be precised. Lives in tropical ponds and slow-moving rivers.

Status : The species’ status hasn’t been assessed so far but it seems to remain common despite locally intensive fishing.
