Classification

Notes : Up to 45 subspecies known. Taxonomic status of populations and subspecies need further investigation. This is treated as a superspecies here for now.

Identification
Adults grow up to 3 cm in length, some subspecies being smaller. Considerable variation in color, from green with yellow dots to white or cream with black dots or bands to yellow-beige to red with whitish spots. Digits often orange-red.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Eastern Africa, from Ethiopia south to Tanzania, west to Uganda and possibly Central African Republic. True range is still not clear. Found in emergent vegetation around marshes and rivers, in all kinds of habitats.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is very adaptable and therefore isn’t facing any major threat despite occasional collecting for trade. Subspecies not assessed yet but will likely be split in the future and assessed separately. Some are likely threatened by habitat loss.
