Identification
Adults can reach 66 cm in length for a weight of 15 kg. Face and flanks are brownish with white-tipped hair giving slight grizzled appearance. Quills are black and white, largest quills are black with short white tips. No visible crest.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South-East Asia and is endemic to Indonesia, being found from Java to Flores. Apparently introduced in south Sulawesi. Lives in mangroves, woodlands, grasslands and degraded habitats.

Status : The species is widespread and abundant locally although it is hunted in parts of its range. Reassessment of threats is probably necessary.
