Notes : No subspecies known. 2 subspecies previously recognized.

Identification
No body measurements, weight up to 6.6 kg. Almost no sexual dimorphism. Unmistakable with its very long uniformly silvery grey fur. Some specimens have blacker cap. Black face and white hairs around face. Whitish hands.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South East Asia and is endemic to western and central Java. These two populations are sometimes treated as separate subspecies. Lives in primary rainforests, mostly undisturbed, up to 2400 m.

IUCN RED LIST : ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is more and more threatened by deforestation, hunting and capture for the trade. One of the least numerous of all gibbons.
