Identification
The species can grow to 16 cm in length, females being slightly longer. Flanks and back brown with black blotches, underside yellow with two rows of black blotches. Males have deeply jagged crest on back and tail and orange tail tip.
Range and habitat
The species occurs in south-east Europe, from Bosnia and south-west Bulgaria to north-west Greece. Lives in forests, pastures, meadows with semi-flowing water, to 1200 m.

CITES : Not listed
Status : This species has been split from T. cristatus. It is threatened by habitat loss, pollution and high degree of fragmentation of its range.
