Notes : No subspecies known. 2 subspecies previously recognized and mostly considered invalid now.

Identification
Adults can grow to 21.6 cm in length. Their skin is rough and grainy. Dorsal coloration is brown to olive-brown, ventral coloration is orange. Small eyes, small tail crest growing bigger during breeding. At high elevations, adults retain gills.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in North America, from south Alaskan coast to coastal western Canada and coastal western USA south to San Francisco area. Lives in forests, woodlands, grasslands, ranchland, up to 2800 m.

CITES : Not listed
Status : The species is found in a wide range of habitats and is adaptable. It occurs in many protected areas and doesn’t seem to face any threats at this time.
