Identification
Adults can reach a maximum length of 76 cm for a weight of 1.2 kg. Plumage entirely dark brownish-gray. Beige spot on cheeks, green iridescence on wings. Bill grey and black. Subspecies with light grey plumage and white cheek band.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in South Africa, south of Zambezi valley. Species occurs in subsaharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia, south to Tanzania. Lives in open grasslands, savannas, marshes, usually near rivers and streams.

Status : The species is globally common and numerous within its range. West African population is becoming rarer. Formerly heavily hunted in South Africa.
