Identification
World’s biggest owl, reaching 71 cm in length for a weight up to 4.2 kg, females heavier than males. Prominent black and beige ear tufts, bright orange eyes. Overall beige to brown with dark spotting. Beige-yellow breast with black spots.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs from central and south China to Korea. Species found from south and Central Europe to Norway, east to most of Asia except south-east. Lives in open woodlands, often in or near inaccessible terrain, to 4500 m.

Status : The species has a huge range but is globally uncommon. It has suffered from habitat reduction and relentless persecution in many parts of its range.
