Identification
Adults can reach 45 cm in length although they are usually much smaller. Tall body profile with back hump. Large silvery scales with dark edges on flanks. Small head. Dark translucent fins with a slight yellow tinge on tail. No red at all.

Range and habitat
The species is found in South East Asia, from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins in Indochina and Thailand to Malaysia, Sumatra and Java. Lives in midwater to bottom depths of rivers, streams, floodplains and reservoirs.

Status : The species is locally common but wild populations are still caught by fisheries and can be polluted by introduction of farmed specimens.
