Identification
The species grows to 75 cm in length, one of the largest known triggerfish species. Body dark grey-black with pearly scales and clear scale edges. Clear face, pink lines around mouth, clear tail peduncle. Yellow fins with dark edges.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area from Red Sea to Mozambique, east to Tuamoto Island, north to South Japan, south to New Caledonia. Lives in lagoons, inner reef slopes and seaward coral reefs, to 50 m.
