Identification
The species can grow to 28 cm in length for a weight of 286 g. Unmistakable. Grey plumage with black spots on flanks and back, rufous belly, red legs. Yellow face with black mask. Subspecies with most extensive black mask.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to east-central Java. Species also found in western and western-central Java, Indonesia. Lives in montane forests, from 300 to 3000 m. Not recorded in plantations.

CITES : Not Listed
Status : The species is considered as restricted-range by Birdlife. Probably threatened locally by deforestation and trapping. Not protected by law.
