Identification
Adults can reach a carapace length of 20 cm for a weight around 1.2 kg. Highly domed shell. Coloration variable from yellow to olive or even bright orange-red. Edges with black markings. Black back with brown areas. Head with black spots.

Range and habitat
This species occurs in South East Asia, from north Vietnam (Tonkin, Annam) to nearby south China (Guangxi, Hainan island). Lives in upland moist evergreen forests, from 200 to 1800 meters.

Conservation
IUCN RED LIST : CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species has been collected to near extinction for food and pet trade. Its habitat is also under pressure. Bred in sanctuaries for conservation.
