Identification
Adults can grow to about 3.5 meters in length, females being smaller than males. Its snout isn’t too long but quite narrow. Brown to grey coloration with transversal dark bands on back, flanks and tail. Large adults are usually duller.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in Australasia and is endemic to northern New Guinea. It was previously known from Aru islands as well. Possibly introduced to Palau. Lives in lakes, rivers, swamps and brackish waters.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is apparently common to abundant in suitable habitat within its range. No threats are known at this time.
