Identification
Smallest species of genus Ara, reaching 51 cm in length for a weight of 430 g. Pure white facial skin extending as narrow band on forehead. Small brown area on forehead, crown slightly blue. Rest of plumage green with red tail.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in South America, from south Panama and Colombia through the Andes to east Bolivia and central Brazil, north to Guianas. Lives in seasonally flooded forest, gallery woodlands, old plantations, to 1500 m.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is one of the commonest macaws in the wild. It may be locally declining from loss of habitat, particularly of dead palms for breeding.
