Identification
Adults can grow to 90 cm in length for a wingspan of 2.34 m and weight up to 7 kg. Very powerful bill with yellow cere. Plumage mostly dull dark brown with clear area on wings, grey upper tail, golden to chestnut brown nape.
Range and habitat
Subspecies found in central Asian mountains east to central China. Species found in most of Europe, northern and central Asia and north America. Lives in open habitats in mountains, steppes, plateaus, deserts up to 5000 m.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : Although the species has a huge range, it has been locally exterminated by persecution and poisoning. Some populations haven’t recovered.
