Identification
Adults can grow to 95 cm in length for a weight around 15 kg. Back is dark bluish-grey, belly and breast white. Black head with large bright orange area on side, orange throat. Bill is long, slightly decurved with conspicuous orange base.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is found south of Indian ocean and southern Australia from Marion Island to Macquarie Island. Species also found south of South America. Lives in flat beaches and coastal areas with grass, always near the sea.

Status : The species remains common to locally abundant and many populations are increasing. Still locally threatened by pollution and loss of habitat.
