Identification
Adults can grow to 12 cm in length but are usually smaller. Forehead straight, slightly bulbous. Tail with well visible rays. Very high dorsal and ventral fins. Two colorations known, either brownish-black or bright yellow. Dark red eyes.

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the Indo-Pacific area, from Red Sea and East Africa to south Japan, north Australia and east to French Polynesia. Lives in sheltered shallow coral reefs, from estuaries to lagoons, down to 12 m.

Status : The species has a huge range. It is widespread and locally abundant. Coral reef destruction can be a long term threat but this is not monitored.
