Identification
The world’s second biggest frog species, reaching 24.5 cm in body length and a weight of 1.4 kg. Back with prominent ridges. Coloration olive to greenish brown. Juveniles show yellow and black spots and mottling.
Range and habitat
The species is found in Eastern and Southern Africa from Angola and DR Congo to Kenya and South Africa. It lives in swamp forests, rivers in and around forests, bamboo groves and even in countries used for slash and burn agriculture.

CITES : Not listed
Status : So far, the species remains at least locally common but is heavily hunted for food in parts of its range. Loss of habitat is also a threat.
