Identification
Body length is up to 48 cm and weight up to 1.9 kg, females being heavier than males. Heavy-bodied tinamou with overall brown plumage. Wings and tail have narrow black barring. Breast grey.

Range and habitat
East Brazil from Pernambuco to South-East Paraguay and extreme north-east Argentina (Misiones). Found in the Atlantic forest of Brazil, in moist primary and secondary forests.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix I
Status : The species is rare and declining throughout its range, being vulnerable to overhunting and habitat destruction. Population known as “pernambucensis” is endangered.
