Identification
Body length to 99 cm, wingspan of 180 cm and weight of 4.7 kg. Robust eagle with short wings and long tail. Back and wings grey-black, head brown with an erectile crest. Breast, belly and thighs mottled black and white. Large toes.
Range and habitat
The species lives from Senegal to East Kenya, south to Angola, DR Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, eastern and central South Africa. Found in forests, dense woodlands and mature plantation stands up to 3300 m.

IUCN RED LIST : NEAR THREATENED
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is widespread and locally common. The main threats it faces are deforestation and overhunting of preys by humans (especially monkeys).
