Identification
Adult reach a body length of 55 cm for a weight of 700 g. Dark brown head and wings with white spots on flight feathers. Belly finely striped brown and white. Facial disk rufous-brown, brighter for this subspecies, and edged with black.

Range and habitat
This subspecies is endemic to Sri Lanka. The species occurs from India to China, south to Sumatra, Borneo and Java. Found in dense and undisturbed forests, from sea level to 4000 m locally.

IUCN RED LIST : LEAST CONCERN
CITES : Appendix II
Status : The species is widespread but globally uncommon. Deforestation is a threat for its survival, especially on Java where it is now rare.
