Identification
Total length of 13 cm. Male is orange-red with black wings and tail. White bars on wing. Small thick black bill. Female is dull yellow. This subspecies has a smaller black mask around male’s eyes and bill.

Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in Andes of Colombia and highlands of Venezuela. The species is also found from Central Mexico to south Bolivia. Lives in canopy of montane rainforests, open forests and drier woodlands.

CITES : Appendix II
Status : This species is locally fairly common and occurs in many protected areas. It has suffered from habitat fragmentation but remains safe so far.
