Identification
The species grows to 89 cm in length for a weight of 4 kg. Dark grey-brown plumage, greyer on breast and belly with light stripes. Undertail white, neck with dark stripes, brown head. Subspecies with long bill with small pink-orange spot.
Range and habitat
This subspecies occurs in eastern Siberia, east of Lake Baikal and winters in north-east China. Species breeds in most of northern Europe and Asia. Lives in tundra and taiga in open areas near marshes, rivers and lakes.

Status : The species is numerous and widespread but climate change poses a threat. Asian subspecies are suffering from hunting and loss of habitat.
