Identification
Adults can reach 11 cm in length. Two horizontal white stripes on black eye. Coloration is bright pinkish-red to red, black spot on gill coverts, conspicuous black spot below dorsal fin and black spot before tail peduncle. Tip of dorsal, caudal and anal fins black (unlike A. maculatus that lacks black tips).

Range and habitat
The species occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts to Florida and Bahamas, south to Gulf of Mexico and northern Brazil. Lives in outer reefs, reef walls, near semi-hard or hard bottoms, to 100 meters deep.

Status : The species is common within its range and suffers from no major threats. Locally declining due to overpredation by introduced lionfish.
